Namibian Landscapes
‘This is a country of immense solitude, of far horizons, arid deserts and jagged mountain heights, hauntingly beautiful….’
from ‘This is Namibia,’ by Gerald Cubit and Peter Joyce. New Holland Publishers, 1999
These 26 images were taken ten years apart, during two separate trips to Namibia, in 2006 and 2016. When I took them I had no idea of presenting them together in a portfolio like this. I was simply impressed - as who could not be? - by the stark beauty of the landscape, the quality and clarity of light, the emptiness and sense of space, the sense of a vast and indifferent silence, of the land just being there, changing, chameleon-like, in the light, as the earth turned on its axis. And then, looking through these images again, I saw how bringing them together, in a single portfolio, provided a sense of a greater whole, of unity and contrast, a feeling of presence and perhaps even love.
